Where have we heard this before??

Recently, The British Medical Journal, which is the equivalent of the Journal of American Medical Association, concluded through their studies that the World Health Organization unduly scared the general public about the threat of Swine Flu or otherwise know as H1N1. In fact, their own statistics show that deaths from swine flu account for 5% of all the influenza deaths last year. Hardly enough to call the swine flu a pandemic. So is this a case where the people in charge got caught up in the so called health scare or something more malicious? According to the BMJ article, several high ranking officials in the WHO have significant financial ties to pharmaceutical companies that produce vaccines including swine flu. Countries throughout Europe and the United States bought millions of vaccines with tax payer money due to the WHO recommendation and misleading information.

But this isn’t the first time we’ve had controversy with the swine flu. In the late 1970′s, a similar panic by the U.S. government led to millions of people getting the flu shot unnecessarily.

We should be careful with what media, government, and institutions such as the WHO are telling us, because their intentions are not always clear and their information can be flawed by their interpretation. Ultimately, we should take away the fact that health doesn’t exist outside of our own innate ability to heal and thrive. We can trust that we have been made by the ultimate creator one that made sure we have everything we need to be healthy.

Lessons from the past

As a history major in college, we were taught by our professors to use themes and trends of the past to inform our understanding of the present. The following you tube video and slide show is a snapshot of what Doctors and the general public believed about cigarettes and their benefits. Pay close attention the photograph of the cyclist, they are smoking DURING the Tour de France, one of the most challenging physical human competitions ever. We now know that not only does smoking inhibit the breath capacity of the lungs but can lead to cancer, lung disease, Gastrointestinal disease, and Heart and blood vessel disease. Not ideal for s cyclist in the Tour de France or anybody that wants to live a healthy life.

What are we doing now that is similar to cigarette smoking in the 20th century?

Perhaps it is SSRIs or selective serotonin re uptake inhibitors, a class of drugs used to combat depression. Unfortunately, side effects of these drugs include mood behavior, suicidal thoughts, increased irritation, impulsiveness, and restlessness. Does it make sense to take something to fight depression that might cause INCREASED restlessness, impulsiveness, and moody behavior? A few example of drugs in this class include Lexapro, Cymbalta, Zoloft, and Prozac.

Perhaps it is statins, a class of drugs aimed at controlling cholesterol. Never mind that there isn’t a causal relationship between heart disease and cholesterol, why take a drug that is used to kill the liver? Most statin users have to get yearly checks on their livers, if the liver shows signs of failure then statins are no longer recommended. Will we look back twenty years from now and wonder why we killed our livers just to lower cholesterol when cholesterol is used by the body to fix blood vessels harmed from heart disease?

There are many more examples of how drugs are not what they seem and for the most part do more damage then good. We can always look for the next quick fix but we will always be left wanting. True health doesn’t come from human understanding and interventions but an unhindered innate intelligence that exist without side effects and long term damage.

Montel Williams and Multiple Sclerosis

This is a great example of why the Brain Stem is essential to your health. Upper Cervical Chiropractors DO NOT treat Multiple Sclerosis, we do however allow your Brain Stem to be clear of interference and when that happens the body can do amazing things. We don’t have a special adjustment for multiple sclerosis or any other condition for that matter, we don’t treat neck and low back pain. Our sole purpose is to guard your Brain Stem from interference and impingement which in turn allows your body to work freely, healing at its utmost potential. Would that include low back pain? yes. Would that include Multiple Sclerosis? yes. It is my opinion that when the power that made the body is able to heal the body without hindrance many amazing and beautiful things happen. Your body can heal from within, that is the only way it happens. There is no human intervention or procedure or medicine that can be better than what we have working inside of us. We just need to make sure that its on the job.

What is Upper Cervical Care?

Upper Cervical Care is really about something greater then chiropractic, it’s about the way we were created and how that affects how we live and heal. We live in an on demand culture that leaves no room for time sensitive processes such as health. Most medical advances emphasize the ability to feel better and to feel better as quickly as possible. But if we were to start at the beginning, we would realize ,from conception to birth, that time is necessary for our bodies to develop properly. It is the reason why most premature babies have trouble with their health throughout their lives. We need those nine months to be developed enough to live outside of our mother’s womb but even then our immune system, nervous system, digestive system, endocrine system, and reproductive system are developing into our early twenties. If time is essential to our growth and development then it would be logical to assume that time is essential to true healing and health.

The second part to this equation is whether health can really come from an outside source. If we take the time to study what happens in the womb, we would find that there is a greater power that directs each of the millions of cells being divided each day to become what would be our liver or lung, or even heart. Although mothers have an important role in promoting proper conditions for her child to grow, the actual direction and orchestration of the human embryo is done by a higher power, God. Whether you are a spiritually or scientifically minded person, the evidence points to a higher intelligence that is responsible for the creation and healing of the human body.

So how does Upper Cervical Chiropractic fit in? As an Upper Cervical Chiropractor, it is my goal to allow the intelligence that created you to flow freely in your body. When that happens, health happens. Health that is true and real is not based on relief of symptoms but fullness of life. We have found that the brain stem is the physical conduit of that intelligence and it is our jobs to be caretakers of your brain stem. There are more details that I can touch on as we move forward but for my first post I wanted to take a look from 10,000 feet. My hope is that this blog will remind us of how wonderfully and fearfully each one of us is made.
